Travel Safe This Thanksgiving

TALLAHASSEE- Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) recommends their 511 Traveler Information System to travelers this Thanksgiving holiday. 

 By calling 511, visiting FL511.com, or downloading the 511 app on iTunes, travelers can get free traffic information on all of Florida’s interstates, toll roads, and major metropolitan roadways. 511 is updated with crashes, congestion, and travel times.
 
 “One fatality is one too many,” said FDOT Secretary Ananth Prasad. “Many times, if there is a crash on an interstate, there can be secondary crashes as a result. The 511 system alerts travelers that there’s congestion or a crash ahead so they can pay more attention and avoid secondary crashes.”
The time-saving 511 system is a resource from FDOT that helps manage congestion, reduce emissions and increase safety. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), knowing of congestion or delays helps prevent accidents.
 
“Traffic congestion can lead to crashes, which can lead to even more congestion,” said FHP Lt. Col. Ernesto Duarte. “If drivers can use 511 to plan a better route, everyone wins.”
