Distracted Driving

Latest News on Texting While Driving (TWD)

When you take your eyes off the road, things can go wrong real quick. It's amazing how many people think they can drive and talk on the phone at the same time – now that's a bad call!

Here are some tips…

1. Never text or talk on your cell while driving. And even though hands-free systems are helpful, they're not the solution. Keep your mind on the road!

2. Don't use your cell while doing anything that requires constant attention…walking in a busy area, crossing a street or riding your bike.

3. Keep your cell phone easily accessible, so that if you do feel the need to grab it, you won't have to rummage around looking for it.

4. Don't hesitate to ignore a call or message if it might distract you. There will be plenty of time to deal with it later. You should even consider turning off your cell while driving.

5. Be aware of your surroundings. Never text or talk when it could be dangerous to you or others. It's just not worth the risk!

Top 10 Ways to Minimize
Distracted Driving

1. CHANGE YOUR WAYS. Pay attention behind the wheel. Recognize the activities that distract you like eating, texting, talking on the phone, smoking, talking to friends in the car, or changing the radio or CD. Anything that distracts can get you or someone else hurt or killed, so pay attention to the road!

2. MAKE A PLAN. Know where you are going before you get in the car. Get good directions or program your GPS before you drive. Checkout weather and road conditions too so you can be prepared.

3. MANAGE YOUR TIME. Don’t be in such a hurry that you have to speed or multi-task or drive aggressively on the road.

4. DON'T LET YOUR DRIVE TIME BECOME YOUR DOWN TIME.  Understand that driving is not your "down time" or a time to catch up on phone calls, personal grooming, or dining. Driving is serious business that deserves your full attention.

5. SCAN & LOOK AHEAD. Look down the roadway to make sure you are aware of others on the road at all times. Be prepared for the unpredictability of others.

6. CONCENTRATE. Think about what you are doing while driving. Make sure that you are not upset or tired when getting on the road.

7. PULL OVER. If you need to do something that will take your eyes and/or mind off the road, pull over and stop first.

8. REDUCE THE USE! Use technology sensibly.

9. SLOW DOWN.  Drive at a safe speed so you can be aware of what other drivers are doing and have time to react if you have to.

10. BUCKLE UP! Always wear your seat belt and make sure your friends are buckled up too.
